The Environmental Protection Agency estimates Americans generate about 25 percent more waste than usual during the holidays. By following some of these ideas listed below, you can make your holiday gatherings close to trash free events.

•  If your party size is larger than the number of place settings you own, consider renting the linens, table settings, glassware, food servers, vases and so much more. Renting makes your party planning easier - the company delivers to your door and picks up after the party. In many instances, you just need to rinse the dishes before sending them back.

•  Consider resources from friends and family. They may have those extra settings or a stash of holiday themed items that can be added to your party, at no additional costs to anyone.

•  Thrift stores and open air markets can be a great place to pick up interesting one-of-a kind plates, mugs and serving platters. At affordable prices, these uniquely picked items can serve as a good conversation starter.

•  If disposable items are your only option, consider compostable ware or products made with recycled paper. Look for products that contain at least 30 percent post-consumer content, which is the paper we recycle as consumers. Since plastic products can be reused and recycled, consider choosing these options over foamlike products labeled No. 6 on the bottom.
