Living Will vs. Health Care Power of Attorney

By having a Living Will or Health Care Power of Attorney, you can alleviate the anxiety, grief, and decision making for family members and loved ones should the need arise. Obviously decisions so important should be discussed in advance with your loved ones so they are aware of your wishes prior to the event of needing to utilize these documents. Although it may not be a topic that is easy to discuss or think about, it is a life changing decision that greatly benefits you and those you love.

A Living Will is a document that expresses a persons desires and preferences concerning medical treatment in the event he or she becomes unable to communicate their wishes during a terminal illness or permanent unconsciousness. They are valid in all states, and must follow certain formalities to be effective. If valid the living will binds health care providers to its instructions.

Health Care Power of Attorney (HCPA) allows you to appoint someone else to make health care decisions for you when you are unable to make them, such as life sustaining medical care. Without HCPA, no one else, not even a family member is allowed to make the decision for you, even if you have been adjudged incompetent or unable to make decisions, for example you are in a coma.

You can revise or revoke the HCPA or Living Will at any time, including during a terminal illness as long as you are competent. You should make sure you have an updated copy on file at all times.

Flex Your Fuel $

With the warmer travel months upon us and the dramatic spike in fuel prices, we all could use a little relief at the pump. Here are some helpful tips when pumping gas and getting the most out of your gas mileage.

AT THE PUMP

Fill up your car in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. All service stations have their tanks buried below ground so the colder the ground the more dense the gasoline. As it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or evening your gallon is not exactly a gallon.

When you are filling up DO NOT squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to fast mode. When you pump the gasoline slower it minimizes the vapors that are created. All hoses have a vapor return, if you are pumping in fast mode, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you are getting less worth for your money.

Fill up when your tank is half full or half empty. The more gas you have in your tank the less air is occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates at an extremely fast rate. The gasoline storage tank have an eternal floating roof that serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation.

BEHIND THE WHEEL

Simple changes in everyday driving behavior can boost miles per gallon from 30 to 40 percent.

Drive at a consistent speed even in traffic. To much braking wastes as much fuel as rapid acceleration. Applying the brakes kills momentum and then you have to speed up again which wastes gas. Leave some buffer space between you and the car in front of you, when you have that space you don't have to slow down and speed up as much.

Accelerate slowly. A pretty simple tip that will leave you with more gas in your tank and less visits to the pump.

Product User Tips

* While compiling your PortaVault it helps to slide the binder out of the canvas case. Just remember to slide back in once you are finished adding documents - even if it is not completed it helps to have the PortaVault ready to grab at any given moment.

* If you live in an area that is prone to flooding or water damage is a concern, put your documents that are irreplaceable in ziploc bags prior to putting in a sheet protector. This will help decrease the chance of water damage.

* To ensure your documents do not slide around in the sheet protectors try using a binder clip or paper clip to hold them in place.
