Protecting the Home Front

Whether you are heading out for a long weekend or spending an extended time away, protecting your home while you are gone is serious business. You can limit your exposure to home burglary by following these tips:

  • Set several lamps on timers to switch on/off at various times so it appears as if you are home.
  • Use motion sensor lights in key areas.
  • Have a neighbor pick up your mail and newspaper so they don't pile up, or if you are going to be gone for an extended amount of time put a hold on your mail and newspaper delivery.
  • Ask a neighbor to place your trash can in front of your home on pick-up day.
  • All doors, including the garage door should have a deadbolt lock.
  • Keep shrubs trimmed to eliminate hiding places.
  • Turn your telephone and answering machine volume to low so burglars can't hear that no one is home.
  • Never leave an away message on your answering machine.
  • Let a relative or neighbor know when you'll be back and where they can reach you in case of an emergency.
  • Have a monitored security system installed.

Keep Your Cool

Can't escape to a cooler destination this summer? Follow these simple tips to help you stay cool and save energy at home.

  • Do the laundry and wash dishes in the evening to avoid adding heat and humidity to your home during the day when your air conditioner is working the hardest.
  • Take your cooking outside. Utilize your outdoor grill to keep the inside of your home cooler and use less energy.
  • Keep all air vents in your home open for better performance of your air conditioner. Replace disposable or clean permanent cooling system air filters at least once a month.
  • Set your thermostat between 78 and 80 when you are home, and 85 or higher when away.
  • Shade your air conditioner. Plant trees or shrubs to shade air-conditioning units, but be sure not to block the airflow. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less electricity than the same one operating in the sun.
  • Use a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans create enough air movement in a room to make it feel four degrees cooler or more. The average ceiling fan uses about the same electricity as a 100-watt light bulb, so you can run one for just pennies a day. But only run the fan when you're in the room -- it does not actually make the room cooler; it just makes it feel cooler when you're in the breeze.

Travel Tip

When traveling make a copy of your passport and other travel documents and carry it in a separate location, like an inside pocket of your luggage. Consider creating a PDF of them as well and emailing it to yourself. If necessary you can retrieve the electronic copies by using the Internet.
