Winter 2009 Newlsetter

Greetings

Wow this year is flying by! It seems with the turning of each year the pace of life gets more hectic, and finding ways to save time and cut costs are mandatory in order to survive. In this newsletter I have shared some tips that I have found useful in hopes they will help make your life easier, or keep a little more green in your pocket!

I would like to take a moment to thank our loyal customers who ordered multiple PortaVaults as holiday gifts for family, friends and clients.  The best compliment the creator of a product can have is when it is recommended and shared by its customers; your support of the PortaVault means a great deal to us.  My goal was to create an easy to use, comprehensive solution for organizing important records and documents; we did it - thanks to you.

You have received this newsletter because you are a customer, friend or someone I thought would be interested in the topics we cover. Enjoy and as always I welcome your comments and suggestions about our products or newsletter at sherie@securitaonline.com

Regards,

Save a Lincoln!

Saving $5 a week might not seem like much but it can add up to some substantial savings over the course of time. Adopting any one of these small tips on a weekly basis can easily keep that Lincoln in your wallet. Incorporate several and you just might need a bigger wallet!

  • Brew your own coffee. Cutting out your decadent coffee house mocha once or twice a week will not only save you money but calories and time - A triple whammy!
  • Once a week, bring your lunch to work, or better yet - organize a lunch swap.  One day you make and bring lunch for yourself and a coworker, the next day, she/he does the same for you.
  • Stop buying water in bottles.  Invest in a water filter and a quality reusable bottle. There are several filter options available, including the Brita system or under-the-sink systems.  You will also be helping the environment - fewer plastic bottles in our already overflowing land fills.

Preventing Paper Pitfalls

Managing the daily paperwork can seem overwhelming if you don't have a system in place. Here are a couple suggestions to make sure you don't end up with those dreaded piles or miss deadlines because the information you needed is lost in a paper mess somewhere.

  • Set aside a block of time daily to manage paperwork, and then stick to what you've scheduled.
  • If possible handle each piece of paper only once.  Avoid putting papers aside till "later" which might become "never".

Use the following system for your mail & important papers

Unpaid Bills
Immediately separate your bills and put them in an obvious place. Be consistent! Don't just stack them with the rest of the mail. They get lost and you spend precious time wondering where they are. Create a specific folder for your unpaid/unopened bills that stays in a specific location so they are always easy to access.

Important Documents
Be familiar with the documents that should be maintained in the PortaVault.  Documents such as insurance renewals, annual social security statements, medical insurance updates, retirement plan summaries, tax returns, DMV registrations, prescription information etc.  all should be filed right away in your PortaVault.

Junk Mail

Always separate the "junk" from your mail right away. Pay attention to what kind of junk mail it is, solicitations for credit cards or renewals of subscriptions, contain a bit of personal information about you so be sure to SHRED these before throwing them away. Be aware that identify thieves frequently go through trash containers that are left in unprotected locations in residential areas. The rest of the junk can be dumped in your recycle bin.

Cool Cell Phone Tips

Unlock your Car Door
Have you locked your keys in the car?  Does your car have remote keys? Then this tip may come in handy some day.

If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home (or in another known location), call someone who can locate them on their cell phone from your cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the other person press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on the other end.  Voila! Your car will unlock.  Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you or having to call AAA.  Distance is no object, you could be hundreds of miles away and if you can reach someone who has the other "remote" for your car, you can unlock the doors.

ICE
The ICE (In Case of Emergency) program was developed to enable first responders (firefighters, policy officers, paramedics etc.) to identify people and obtain important medical information from designated relatives or friends.  In your cellular phonebook enter the information for your emergency contact person and type ICE before the person's name.

Go Green - Save a Tree!

Every year, 19 billion catalogs are mailed to American consumers.  That's 63 catalogs for every man, woman and child in America.  To produce these catalogs, 3.6 million tons of paper are required, which translates into 53 million trees!  If you want your name removed from a catalog's mailing list, check out www.catalogchoice.org.  Not all of the catalogs you receive will be listed, but hopefully you can make some progress to save a few trees. You'll also save yourself some time going through your "junk mail" since there will be fewer catalogs to toss in the recycle bin.
